Chapter Thirteen

Rich

“When it’s all over,” the gunny’s voice had bellowed over the transport jet’s engines, “you can drink, scream, cry, hit something. Whatever you need. But you save that shit till you’re home, or I will shoot you before Haji does.”

Lying on my back with Leo’s head on my shoulder, I wondered what the gunny would’ve thought of me now. This wasn’t over. And I hadn’t drunk, screamed, cried, or hit anything. Though maybe in a crude sense I could look at Leo and say I’d hit that. Pretty sure that wasn’t what the gunny had meant.

This wasn’t over, but there was a pause. A lull in the chaos. With no one shooting at us and no immediate danger, we’d seized an opportunity and blown off some steam. Maybe that meant we’d get through this without losing our sanity. Was that even an option anymore?

“You do realize,” Leo mused after a while, “that if someone asks during the trial if I screwed around with my handler, I’m obligated to say yes.”

I eyed him, trying to look stern, but the playful sparkle in his eyes made me laugh. “I can’t imagine that’ll come up during the trial.”

“Hey, you never know.” He twisted a little, stretched, and propped himself up on his elbow so he could gaze down at me. A few dark curls tumbled into his eyes. “Lawyers ask weird questions sometimes.”

“Uh-huh.” I brushed his hair out of his face. “And why in the world would they feel the need to ask about this?”

He shrugged. “Discrediting the witness?”

“I think that would do more to discredit me than you, right? Since I’d be the painfully unprofessional U.S. Marshal?”

A sharky grin lit up his face. Trailing a finger down the middle of my chest, he said, “I like it when you’re unprofessional.”

“So I noticed.” I slid my hand along his side and onto his hip, and as I gazed up at him, it was hard not to flash back to every incarnation of Leo I’d seen since the beginning. The smarmy criminal. The scared kid. The needy lover. Everything in between. And as I watched him, guilt trickled through my veins, cooling the warmth my orgasm had left behind.

Leo frowned. “What’s wrong?”

I sighed. “This really is unprofessional.”

“So?” Another shrug. “I won’t tell if you don’t.”

“It’s not that.” I pushed myself up, and when I settled, we were both sitting, facing each other with our thighs pressed against each other and the rumpled sheets pooled around us. Without meeting his gaze, I rested my hand on his leg. “I’m supposed to be protecting you. Being objective and…” I shook my head. “Not thinking about how much I want to get you back into bed, you know?”

“Rich.” His voice was softer and more soothing than I’d ever heard it. “You’re a trained Marine. I’m a criminal who hasn’t gotten myself killed yet. We both know when to focus on surviving and not think about getting laid.”

I searched his eyes.

“You’re overthinking this,” he said. “Honestly, I think we’re probably in better shape now that we’ve fucked.
